about

The clanging of metal in a factory. The swoosh of steam from an espresso machine at a coffee shop. The nervous shuffle of students in an auditorium. In all these cases, sound functions as a way of transforming a space into a specific place for a unique purpose. The production of place does not occur in isolation. New places construct boundaries to establish inside/outside distinction. This presentation seeks to critically evaluate the inside/outside dichotomy of "support" and "academics" within schools. Through the manipulation of sounds found in an office, this presentation questions the rigid production of the office as an embodied and imagined space of "support" for "academics." How does our understanding of a school change when this supposedly concrete boundary bleeds together, forming an interconnected wall of sound?

The initial performance of this track was paired with the following text:

Within traditional school systems, we enact a boundary between the “academic” and the “support.” This boundary establishes two separate spheres of being within any school.
In turn, the spaces are coded to reflect their affiliation to either “academic” or “support”; bodies are labeled as belonging to one category or another; regimes of truth are established which regulate who is allowed to produce knowledge.
Seemingly, the school is of two.
This becomes of the implicit mantra of the school.
The administrators in service of academics.
The custodians in service of academics.
The food workers in service of academics.
Athletics and extracurriculars in service of academics.
Every subdivision within the school is in relation to academics. Thus the boundary, the dualism of “support” and “academic” is not equal. The lesser term--”support”--is always in service of the greater term--”academic.”
“One cannot be without two”
“Academics” cannot exist without “support.” “Support” cannot exist without “academics.” Both are interrelated, working jointly to produce the school.
The discursive boundary is the exact thing that obscures the interconnectivity of both spheres. In reality, both are constituted through their interaction with each other.
What does is mean to rethink the boundary?
The broken fiction of the leaky membrane that is the academic/support divide reveals the possibility for new practices.
Knowledge is not an object only held but teachers; instead, a multiplicity of knowledges exist within the minds of janitors, food workers, office assistants, and groundskeepers.
Care is provided not just by the people we directly interact with, but instead the network of people visible and invisible who enable our being.
A “school” is not a series of classrooms, but a space produced by the interaction between all of its components.
It is of more than two.
